Welcome to DVD-ROM Guide
If you have version 1.5 firmware, that's a good thing. It means your son will be able to run Homebrew and backups.
I suggest you have a read around the PSP forum and learn all about it ... plenty of information here.
Resist the temptation to upgrade to firmware 2.0 or 2.5, at least until you understand the implicatioons.
Once you have a general idea of what it all means, post back with any specific questions and you will get plenty of help ;)

Stick with the v1.5 firmware as that allows you to play the homebrew stuff :)

Have a look and read over at pspupdates : http://pspupdates.qj.net/
.......you really do need to do a bit of legwork.
Look at the Categories and you will see the Homebrew lists.
It covers things like Applications, Demos, Launchers etc.
You will also see all the Emulators, which allow you to run games from other consoles etc.
To give you a rough outline, most folks use firmware 1.50, with a 512mb or 1gb memory stick and load the stuff from the stick.
Fastloader 7 (Application) alllows you to make a backup copy of your games on the memory stick, which you can then save on your PC. This can be loaded back to the memory stick when needed.
