Go to Device Manger/IDE ATA ATAPI Controllers ... Right Click/Properties/Advanced.
Check out both Primary & Secondary Channels ... if they are not set to DMA and show PIO Mode, just change them there.
Also I have found that Pioneers do like to be the Master drive, so if it isn't that already, try moving it to the Secondary Master.

M8 It wont let me change it. it says that if available it will use DMA but currently using PIO mode

This is a known problem in XP.
Go to Device Manager, navigate to the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers and right click the Channel and select "Uninstall"..
Then reboot and let XP reinstall the channel & redetect your drive(s) .... this more often than not will sort it out.
i had this very same problem and to fix it i had to do what Phil has posted above.
i also had to update my aspi drivers as well before doing the above!

have you installed the drivers that came with your motherboard, it may be that xp does not have its own drivers for your board and you need the ones on the disk that came with it

You dont have an asus board by any chance and installed the software? or have intel accelerator installed as this can cause problems with DMA.

Got the dma sorted now but it goes from bad to worse.. I had to flash the firmware and now the 106 has packed up!
