and one of these for the audio side
http://www.maplin.co.uk/products/module.asp?CartID=040401175038220&moduleno=34128

Very amusing

The USB audio converter - do you know if it will work on USB 1.1 when I am already importing mp3+g from an external drive. I suspect it might struggle ?

You can play mpegs from an Iomega host powered USB hard drive and also skip to another directory on it and play a music track seamlessly using USB1.
The sound from the little gizmo is superb.
I only got it because my Compaq has a bit of hard drive hum coming through from the soundcard when it's blasting out.
It takes a few seconds for the mpeg to load up though so I'd suggest keeping them on the main drive.

If he has an "S-Video" out on the laptop does he not just need a tv with an "S-Video" in socket....or at the most something to convert his "S-Video" to scart?...just wondering

Maybe he wants to be able to work on the next filler track or cue up the next karaoke song whilst someone is already singing - a dual display sort of arrangement? Must admit, I'd like to do that too !

Instead of using the svideo out, most laptops have another 15 pin monitor output. You can connect a cheap 15" monitor (about £20 refurb) and depending on the graphics card in the laptop you can get software to spread the desktop across 2 screens. Having winamp and playlist on 1 and the words on the other. ATI have a free piece of software on there site called Hydravision. This will let any ATI vga card use an extended desktop and I often use this on older laptops as most come with an ATI card but I belive nvidia do something similar.

maplins do a cheap s-video to phono converter, then you can use scart plug with video in phono plug.
Check your graphics card settings for "duel view"

If you listen to Colbol and get the Avermedia, you can zoom in on one part of your laptop screen and display it on the big screen leaving the rest of your laptop screen for whatever you want--hidden to the rest of the world.

most pc's with a tv out lets you span windows across two seperate monitors,tv's and so forth.so one window can show the directory you are using to select tracks and the other say the tv can show just the cdg graphics bit, like winamp in full screen mode.simple if you read up and get to know the software that comes with the hardware.most new laptops now come with tv out, either svideo or compsite video and dual monitor outputs, even the cheap ones.add all of that to a couple of decent sized h drives(full of your mp3+g's),a sound blaster extigy,a decent amp speakers a so on,and you have a pretty decent set up.
