Yep ... you can do that, but why would you want to ? as after purchasing your domain name, you will need to Host it somewhere and the Host will provide you with Webspace/email options etc.

no, theres plenty of places providing domain names ONLY for a few £ a year, and he could redirect it to the ntl site
yes they'd all offer hosting but it'd be quite a bit more than £1.99 or whatever
mooncat - www.1and1.co.uk - not sure if they're the cheapest but they're one of the biggest and best

Yep ... the point I was making was ... it's not just a case of a "one off" purchase of the domain name and that's it, which was how I read mooncat's post.
The £1.99 a month package from 1 & 1, is an ongoing cost for hosting the name (£23.88 a year + vat = £28.06).
Then there's the domain registration & renewal cost every 2 years, which they normally (conveniently) forget to tell you about ;) ... this varies in price, dependant on the domain name you choose .... ranges from £1,99 - £8.99 a year and on some domains is payable in advance.

Update :
Sorry chimpuk .... I was looking at the wrong package at 1 & 1.
It seems as though the "Instant Domain" package will providea cheap solution for mooncat.
I must say that's a very good deal .... I am looking at their other packages for my own domain at the moment. I can see some ££££'s to be saved ;)
Can I ask you if you've used this company or had any good recommendations ?

I always use www.123-reg.com
got 5 domains with them, get email and web forwarding (and also free submission to 10 search engines), costs around £2 for the year, they give you loads of warning when you need to renew
1 sign in name/password and you can then manage all your domains
I also use 1&1 for one of my domains as well as hosting but I don't like their interface/control pannel as much

Originally my 1st host (iPower) was used to register my domain name. When we decided to leave iPower, it took a lot of pne calls and yelling to get them to unlock my domain name so that I could take my site to another host. I would recommend securing your own registration if possible if for no other reason to save yourself some headache later. GoDaddy is who I am using now, though I supply my own DNS server now. No matter who you go with, you need to be very careful you don't end up 'signing' your domain away. A lot of these businesses are very shady.

i've used 1and1 before for both webhosting and email service. had a few problems with the email service, but i must say, the people there are great and very helpful.
best of all, their prices are cheap as chips.
