i have a radeon 9800xt graphics card and i have just found the setting that tells me the temp and when the computer is idle graphics card is at 71c, i have not ticked the enable overdrive as i dont know what this is, the overdrive level is 411mhz. when i play far cry on full settings after about 10 mins the screen goes blocky and it stays blocky untill i do a restart. i had to buy a new heatsink and fan as far cry was making my cpu overheat as well
cpu temp is 52c case temp is 34c when idle
i take it that 71c is to high for the card when the computer is idle?

These cards run EXTREMELY hot, they will run well above 85oC at full bore. 71oC at idle is way too hot, is the GC heatsink & fan attached correctly, temps on these cards have been known to melt surrounding components. first thing you need to do is eliminate the cards onboard cooling by having it checked or replaced.
It is possible to cut your case temp and CPU idle temp by half with correct heatsink/fan and case fans, you need airflow through the case to extract warm air, you need adequate ventilation to allow the case fans to draw the air in that they extract.

i phoned the place that i got the card but they wanted me to leave it with them till they test it, but if im lucky it will only take 2 hours (they are taking the pish) its the last time im going to be dealing with those arseholes they are quick enough to take my money but when i have a problem they dont want to know about it.
as for the cpu temp i just bought the heat sink and fan as the dick from the shop said that would be good enough as its rated to 3gig

I've got an Asus 9800xt card and after heavy gaming it only reaches 51 degrees C. I've read in the past that Radeon's cooling on the 9800xt is total crap. This is the main reason I went with the Asus. My cards Idle temp is around 42 degrees C. Perhaps you could get an aftermarket cooling fan for it.

2 Hours is faily reasonable if they are quite busy, and the dick at the shop was correct when he said "it was good enough". I was reffering to spending upwards of £50 for top line heatsink/ 92mmfan, plus the cost of case fans that will extract warm air efficiently enough to keep the temp inside the top of the case equal to or lower than room temp, as one is no good without the other, and a means of switching the cooling between 5v & 12V unless you want the cooling to needlessly run at full bore while the system is idle. Then you might find that you may need to replace the PSU if it is operating at its limit as all fans will be connected directly, plus the fan controller, I have recently modified the baybus I built into one of the cdrom bay covers to a 6 gang 5V/off/12V with 12 LED's(I sold my old one as I wanted to change the design and I got carried away drilling holes). If your case does not have internal fan capacity, a really good method is to make a template and CAREFULLY cut & drill the top of the case to fit a single/multiple fan blowhole, the more fans the better as they can be set to run at 5V for near silent cooling. As Stryker mentioned you could also look at modifying on board cooling. The problem may also be related to the cards use on a non xt system with non xt OS & drivers, this I am guessing at as it is early days for xt. for me anyway.

RAMsinks wouldn't hurt either. Can get 'em at the more specialized PC shops or on eBay. They go for anywhere between $10-40 a set ... $10 gets you decent ones, $40 just gets ones that look pretty. :P

Have you seen a 9800XT?
You might find it difficult to put RAMsinks on it given that it is completely covered, both front and back, by copper heatsinks which cover the core and the RAM.

My radeon 9800xt is always at 69c while idle.. i guess i better buy some more cooling fans tomorrow then before something goes pear shaped.:insane:
