getting started with xbox live on ntl-help please

connected my link cable directly to my xbox from my ntl modem and configured all the settings but still no luck in getting it going.

have inputted my correct ips,dns etc but nothing
just get the message now:

network gateway could not be reached-confirm your ip details are corrct etc(which they are)

is there anything i have missed?

surely i can just turn my modem on and use xbox live or does the modem ahve to be configured via the pc to allow a connection?

Is your network cable straight or crossover?
if you have one type switch to the other
Should be straight for the modem

didn't realise you couldn't use pc and xbox at same time-spoke to some guy who said 1 or other no tboth-got it working via autodetect.

so i need to get a router then?

i have a enet socket on my pc bu is that just to accept a modem not to send a signal?
