Firewire crap won`t boot

I have a maxtor external firewire/usb 2.0 drive, and it wont`t boot when I use firewire cable. Has anyone had this same problem b4?

I think it might be the motherboard, or the cable. this is fairly new (6months) so it shouldnt be. has had this problem be4 and it worked out ok, without me doing much. any ideas? any1?
