 I tried to update it with the latest version of ipod updater, but my (Windows 2000 Professional) computer won't recognize it. Late last night, I got an IPOD SERVICE ERROR AND THEN THE DREADED IPOD INTERNAL MANAGER ERROR. Earlier yesterday, I followed the reset instructions and that worked temporarily, but then it wouldn't turn off or stop whirring. Now it won't turn on AT ALL. Short of uninstalling iTunes (all my songs are mysteriously NOT saved in "My Music" folder though most are), is there any way to fix this? One site said to wait 24 hrs then try to reset it. It won't charge or do anything, it's as if it's dead. Someone suggested removing the battery but I don't want to break it (I DO WANT TO SMASH IT TO BITS!) Of note, I just bought a Griffin iTrip transmitter and updated iTunes recently and ever since then, I have had problems with it. It is infuriating! p.s. The iPod shuffle works great but there is no way to charge it short of plugging into the USB-I suppose there is a pricey accessory... HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANKS!! :wavey:

Before I had the triangle/exclamation point/file folder. Now I have the battery and triangle/exclamation point. Ipod Updater tells me to plug in an Ipod to update it, but it is plugged in. And I kept getting the "unsafe removal of device" message even though the thing was plugged in the entire time. I checked the cables, restarted, etc. Nothing seems to be working. I am at the point where I am ready to take it in to the store and demand a new one. I have only had it less than 8 months and barely ever used it! Thanks for any insight!

I can suggest trying to update the firmware on a computer from someone around you that has an ipod and doesn't have windows 2000. Might just be a simple error not being able to transmit correctly, I just hope you didn't fuxored the unit while it erased the old firmware.
You might still be able to get RMA from apple or the vendor if you want to get another one, but that depends on the warranty they offer.
If your searching for a replacement mp3 player, I can suggest a creative zen, I own 2. Really great stuff in the zen micro.
:wavey:Welcome to the forums CCRIDER, I hope this post helps out somewhat.

Thanks for the tip. I did manage to get it updated after repairing the iTunes program. But it died after 20 minutes of use. I think the Griffin iTrip transmitter is the culprit here! So I then got the "sad iPod" icon on the screen and now cannot put it in disk mode or update it and also iTunes doesn't recognize it (OF COURSE!). It's plugged into my PC and it has a battery symbol but it looks frozen and weird. Very frustrated. And because it has been 8 months (rather than less than six months), it will cost $31 in shipping and handling for Apple to even consider repairing it. Also, if they determine it does NOT need repair, they will charge me $100 in diagnostic fees. SO, I have no iPod for a long time AND I could be out $131 to boot! I could just wait for the price to drop and buy another one for all that hassle and expense! AND Apple has no contact email site to get support. You just have to pay your money and take your chances. And if they lose it, it's YOUR fault! What a gigantic racket! :yell1:

http://dvdrom-guide.com/forums/images/smilies/t_up.gif Apple replaced my IPOD last night. The hard drive was dead. They said possibly it may have been since I have a home built computer. They alleged maybe the ports aren't wired properly. I have had it 4 years and I have seen no evidence of that!
The guy told me someone brought one in that had been through the washing machine. He told him to go to another guy, but not tell him it got wet. They replaced his, too. They don't ask mayn questions and they do not do repairs. Apple will "repair" your IPOD but the guy told me they really just give you a new one!
He also said sometimes you can revive a dying hard drive temporarily by sticking it in the freezer (also works for a cell phone dropped in the lake)!
You can buy a one year extended warranty for $60 up to the day before your original one year warranty expires (from date of ORIGINAL purchase, not replacement). Not sure why ANYONE would buy it at the beginning if you could get a freebie and then still maybe buy the extended warranty if you are having rotten luck.
So cheers to everyone and thanks for your help!
