Try in Safe Mode (F8 at boot up)

it gives me option to setup windows , go back to last working point and the others or repair but the repair gets to the command bit then asks for a password for windows logon but i've never set one and it won't let me get any further

Try booting into Safe Mode again, then click on CTRL/ALT & Delete, to open Task Manager. Click on Applications tab and click the New Task button.
Type in explorer and see if u can get the desktop back with working Start button etc.

If yo can, go to Control Panel/Add/Remove Programs, put a tick in the box "Show Updates" and scroll down to the Hotfix you installed and remove it.

This may help, depending on what the Hotfix was.

It may be Windows reg is knackered!

You could try booting from your original Windows Disk (set boot to CD first) then not choosing Windows repair (as this takes you to an unpleasant consule) but hittng repair as next option in the sequence.

This willl overwrite windows without lsoing your personal files.

Phil - let me know if you disagree.

Hope it works out for you M8 ;)

You may try to do windows update. I have the same problem before when I deleted xp hotfix, but after download and install sp1 or 2 back, it worked again.

Yup ...... try scotblok's suggestion ... if this fails, try booting in Safe Mode, then click on CTRL/ALT & Delete, to open Task Manager.
Click on Applications tab and the New Task button.
Type in cmd .... then type in sfc /scannow in the Command Prompt box and click OK. You may be asked to insert your Windows disk.
This will check all your system files and replace any that are corrupted.

If neither suggestion works, give us a bit more detail in your response ... i.e. at what stage did it fail ... what error message did you get etc.
..... "no joy" or "still cant get to it that way" doesn't give us a lot to go on ;)

right, tried that with no joy, this is the error message.

the specific error code is 0x000006ba
[ the rpc server is unavailable ]
thats exactly all it says, i really do appreciate your help on this, thanks

If you have "My Computer" on the desk top ... can you now do a system restore "My Computer\C:\WINDOWS\system32\Restore\rstrui.exe".

jimmy mumu

Can you now open Internet Explorer and get on line ? .... if so, it maybe worth trying to do a Windows Update again

Hmmmm. it sounds as though the problem is with the RPC Server.
According to Microsoft, This behavior can occur if the certificate for Verisign time stamping has been removed from the computer. ... see here :
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;296241

Although they suggest a fix, the resolution looks very long winded and invloves exporting a file on another box and importing it on yours.

In view of the amount of time you have dedicated to this and the fact that this fix may not work either, I am inclined to agree with your thinking ....i.e. A fresh install may be a more speedy & definite solution.

Goood luck ..... let us know how it goes.

From another forum :

Question
NTLDR: couldn't open drive,multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1) error on Windows XP

Installed new HD-Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 80gb. Ran the xp setup from disk. All seemed to load properly. Rebooted machine, Computer screen came up, then the following message:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)
NTLDR: couldn't open drive,multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)

When running set up, I did not run any special SCSI driver during set up. Ran XP Repair console and found Boot list, and can see files in DOS mode.

How do proceed? Bios issue, SCSI driver issue, IDE cable issue, Pin configuration on HD, ? I am lost....

After a few posts
Took out the CMOS battery for 10 seconds and put it back. It worked ok so far.

Can not belive it !!!!!!!!!!

jimmy mumu

i don't even know what a cmos battery looks like or where it is

ken
08-20-2005, 05:31 PM
The CMOS battery is on the motherboard, but you can probably also reset the CMOS with jumpers depending on the board, others can probably give better advise on this.

BTW the above posts were taken from a forum I don't know so can't vouch for but given the similarity of the problem must be worth a try.

It's not your day is it ;)

From what you describe, I would put my money on it being a corrupt master boot record (MBR).

Try installing XP again, but this time use the option to remove the partition.
Then create a partition and do the long format.

jimmy mumu
08-21-2005, 08:36 AM
right i did all that but still the same problem, i noticed that when i deleted the partition and it restarted there was still a partition there of about 8mbs, i thought this should have gone, i've just downloaded the six floppy set from ms and am going to try that way

PhilEnfield
08-21-2005, 10:09 AM
Dont worry about the 8mb partition ... XP autocreates this, just in case at some later time you want to enable Dynamic Disks. Nothing to worry about.

Just a thought .... have you got a spare hard drive, you whack in, just in case it's a drive fault.

jimmy mumu
08-21-2005, 11:14 AM
six floppy idea was the same result so i've got a spare hd will try that, just a thought, the hd i was trying to fix was preconfigured by compaq do you think they may have set it so it cant be reused

PhilEnfield

I doubt it.

May be worth grabbing a utility from the HDD manufacturers website, to do a low level format and check its integrity.
