i'm a complete newbie at this so any technical stuff will possibly be over my head. Modded xbox now saying invalid region when discs that have previously played ok - does this mean chip is bu%%ered or is there an easier solution ???

Thats your chip not working m8, thats the standard MS bios's response to a backup.
What chip do you have and is it flashable? does it have a switch? etc etc etc.

do you know if the kids changed any settings in the dashboard?

yea m8, go into normal dash then check settings etc, needs to be either set to pal or ntsc depending on what game you wanna play ..
