just bought a new asus mobo and a sempron 3000 cpu today to update my old system - installed it all and it wont fire up - when i press the power button the leds and the fans start up for about half a second then stop again - is this because i need a bigger psu? i have currently got a 350 and in the mobo instructions, it says that it should be ok with that but it aint!!
i have double checked all connections, tried unplugging the cdroms and extra hd so only the primary hd is connected and still no joy - any ideas?

Check your Mobo jumper, normally you need to change BIOS jumper first before the board will fire up.

Most board will have a jumper for BIOS reset when leaving the factory, and when its on, it will prevent the board from start up.

Sounds like a mobo problem. PSU is cutting out to stop any further damage. Duffy's right - there will be a reset CMOS jumper (usually down bottom right on an ASUS mobo - look for a jumper covering two out of three pins). A 5 second move from pins 1/2 to 2/3 clears the CMOS. 350W PSU is AOK for a sempron cpu.

It's possible that if it's a socket 754 board the BIOS isn't sempron ready and needs flashed (we've seen a number of boards with the 'Sempron ready' sticker on the box which don't actually recognise a sempron). Check the BIOS revision number on the ASUS website too.

All the best

It's possible - you'd need a guaranteed chip and RAM to do a second Mobo test. That's what we use when test benching possible failed mobo's.

Get your eye fixed 1st though! (See ya back on BST M8)
