I get this strange message when I am shutting down Win XP. First the machine (2.6Ghz,1 gig dual ddr ram) works for like 30 seconds before the picture of shutting down, abort, change user shows up
then I get the message "username is a folder needed to run windows. It can*t be deleted".
Has anyone been around this, and have some experience? Cause I sure dont. This might not be entirely correct, because it says so not in english, but in another english, and my english isn't very good.
I have recently installed Tweak XP, and Powertoys for WIN XP. Does anyone know if this might be the problem? That my machine works sloooow, and every time i try to shut it down, it works for like 30 seconds, then tells me its not possible to delete the username systemfolder?
please help me, obi-wan kenobi, you`re my only hope. The rest of you guys and girls can also help me!

Were you trying to delete a user's folder?

have you got different user accounts set up on your machine (ie for different people) that you've recently tried to delete?
If not then be afraid! Backup documents etc stored under 'my documents' to a different location. get yoru virus software up to date, install spybot and go from there...

Does anyone know where I go in the registry to find out what happens every time I press the shut down button?
I also haven`t tried to delete any system folders... especially not those named after me....

ok, this may not be a solution but it could be a work around.
1. Try exporting all yoru files n settings to a temp file.
2. Set up a 'new user account' for yourself and retrieve the settings.
3. Delete the old user account.
Sometimes its a lot easier to find ways to sidestep the problem than tackle it head on.

I don`t have any files in my documents folder. I used Tweak XP the other day, and believe that it may be because I changed some of the systems folders, that things screwed up...

Can you do a system restore, to wind things back to before you had a problem? This may be worth a try (assuming you're using XP)
Start, Accessories, System tools, system restore
Spybot is not a ant-virus app. It is an anti-virus app. Any app that trys to delete data is therefore is called a virus. For that you need something like F-secure, Norton, etc...
And if you are infected with a virus and you do a system restore then you will still be infected as you need to rid your computer of it beforehand.

?? What is spybot? I have Norton and Spybot and Adaware installed on my computer. Of no avail of course ...

Not quite correct. 'A' definition of a virus is a programme that exists on your machine against your wishes with a purpose of being malicious. I regularly use Adobe to manage and delete graphic files I dont want. That doesnt make it a virus.
Spybot is not an 'anti virus' programme per se but it does clear out a LOT of unwanted programmes which whilst not being malicious in nature (causing harm) have a similar effect in degrading system performance and impeding on the privacy of the user. Maybe we should campaign for a change in the definition of spyware progs.
Anyway, keeping on topic... Doing a system restore might actually help as it will restore archived files to the current ones. Now this is not guarenteed to resolve the situation but it may cure the problems. Ps2Wiz is partly right in that doing a system restore will not remove a virus from your machine, but incorrect in that you do not have to remove it beforehand. Should the system restore resolve your problem then turn off system restore, do a full virus sweep, and then reinstate it. This is because most (all?) AV progs will not look at files in the restore section of the drive.
Hope that helps a little.

Have you tried my suggestion about creating a new user account and manually deleting the old one?

I haven`t tried it no. But I think I am tempted of actually reformatting the c: partition on my harddrive, because I have some trouble there that shouldn`t be. Amongst them is that I cant suddenly find my firewire harddrive, and that`s a bit annoying since I have lots of stuff that I need when I work...
Maybe I will try your suggestion. More I think about it, the more sensible it works. If only my firewire drive...

I usually end up reformatting my system every 6 months.
got it down to a 90 minute process now. If you want any tips on how to store your files etc to reduce the hassle than ask away. Cant say its perfect but find it works well for me.

Thanks for the tip. I have formatted my c:drive, installed XP (again), and now everything is working. Thanks for all the tips, folks!
