If you are having problems downloading the updates, I came across this on my travels, which seems to work very well, or at least it has for me. :t_up:
If you only have the one option for download from free.grisoft.cz try this:

Navigate to your AVG install directory and rename your existing url.ini file to url.iniold.
Copy the following and paste into notepad and save it as url.ini. Put this new file into your AVG install directory. You'll now have 3 options to select from, with www.grisoft.com (http://www.grisoft.com/) being the default.

[SERVER_NAME]
1=free.grisoft.cz
2=ftp.grisoft.com
3=www.grisoft.com

[SERVER_URL]
1=http://free.grisoft.cz/softw/60/fe
2=ftp.grisoft.com/pub/softw/60/fe/
3=http://www.grisoft.com/softw/60/fe/
Actual URL=3

I was going to make a smart arse remark about something like why simply go to Grisoft.com and download manually when you could do the hack posted above. :)

Then I realised that this is a good thing for those that like to update on a schedule.

Good find

The manual update url is
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_updt6.php?lng=fe

open up AVG program. Click help, Program info.
Look at program version, the last 3 numbers are the viri updates you have.
Download the right bin.
Go to: c:/program files/gri soft/avg/udates
Move the bin you just downloaded into that folder.

Start up AVG program again.

Here's an update :

Navigate to your AVG install directory and rename your existing url.ini file to url.iniold.
Copy the following and paste into notepad and save it as url.ini. Put this new file into your AVG install directory. You'll now have 4 options to select from, with www.grisoft.com/akm/softw/60/xx (http://www.grisoft.com/) being the default.

[SERVER_NAME]
1=free_grisoft
2=ftp_grisoft
3=www_grisoft
4=akamai_grisoft

[SERVER_URL]
1=http://free.grisoft.cz/softw/60/fe
2=ftp.grisoft.com/pub/softw/60/fe/
3=http://www.grisoft.com/softw/60/fe/
4=http://www.grisoft.com/akm/softw/60/xx/
Actual URL=4

EDIT :
I just noticed that after downloading todays updates, the url.ini was modified to default back to the http://free.grisoft.cz/softw/60/fe URL ... Sneaky :suspic:

We have just about had enough with AVG, most customers with even the full paying version cant seem to update, nevermind the free version.

Been looking at AVAST www.avast.com , they also do a free home version which seem to work quite well.

From what I've heard, AVG's servers can't handle the amount and size of the updates, thus creating problems when trying to update.

I'm with Duffy90210. I bought my young son an entry level Dell 2400 for Christmas. After the 90 day McAfee trial expired, I thought about renewing the McAfee subscription for $30 but decided to give the AVAST free home version a go-round first.

I gotta say, I'm very impressed! The program is highly configureable and the database is auto-updated almost daily. I give this AV proggy a big :t_up:!

Im also with duffy on this one, In fact i also think Avast! is far superior to AVG and im glad i decided to change.
PS. I even love how it speaks to you after updating its database. "A big kid i know" LoL
