I am moving in with my girlfriend in a couple of weeks *blush* but she hasn’t got broadband and there is no chance of getting it, she only connects at 28.8kb/s.
I was wondering what program would be good to use for remote control of my broadband pc from my gf’s?
All I want to do is be able to check my binary newsreader and command my broadband pc to download the files.
I have a netgear router with two pcs at the broadband end, I only want access to one of them.
At the moment I use win xp but I know that it gets unstable if left up for a long time. So would it be best if I used a different OS, Linux? And then what remote control program and newsreader is best under linux?

Oh yeah I want this to be secure don’t want any tom, dick or hacker getting to my broadband pc!

Thanks hk.

Ps, please note I don’t want to transfer the files I download, just command them to download on the broadband pc. Then I can go around and sort them out

most people including myself will have tried and probably found VNC at http://www.realvnc.com/ to be one of the best and easiest, plus it's free. it works of either a server/client basis or a web-based java console connecting to the server.

have to say though, anything at 28K is going to be a real pain in the...
security... well it is password protected, about as good as any of them really.
router... you would need to set up port forwarding on the router to pass the incoming request to the correct PC out of the two.
XP unstable.... wouldn't say so really. mine happily sits for 25 days or so without a reboot. maybe do a fresh install before you start.

in my opinion no reason to go to linux etc

yeah I was thinking 28.8 was going to be too slow, I will try and install the remote access at my work (depends on their permitions etc)!
or do i have to!!!
I am liking the sound of it :)

"For ultimate simplicity, there is even a Java viewer, so that any desktop can be controlled remotely from within a browser without having to install software."

Thanks will be phoning up the misses and giving her instructions down the phone to test to see if it works.
EDIT. thats a stupid idea, she cant use the phone and net at same time, and she is so far in the sticks no mobile phone reception! mmm 2nd thoughts about moving out there ;)

tried it on my network at home, worked fine.

Just got to get no-ip.com sorted and things like that so can try real world test.
