In have a small network, 4 PCs, I am not sure if the following is connected but the last thing I can recall doing before all my troubles started was trying to get a usb scanner to work, god knows why because xp usually picks up on it, but in my case it didnt, so I attempted to load drivers for the scanner as well as twain.

Any way for some strange reason I finally got it to work, since then and As I said before there may not be no link, I have had major annoying incidences.
First off I get windows pop up going on about WMI, this is linked to programmes on my PC. But the most annoyuing thing to happen now is the exe program icons wont actually install, a dos window pops up, to quick to read most of them but one did stay up long enough for me to read, it stated "program too big to fit in memory"

Certain program icons I have got over the years will not work, when I do find some that eventually do work and I perhaps leave it on the pc, a little later if I go back to it to attempt to do another install it wont work. Another thing is that the icon picture changes, when it does go wrong.

Now I have done a complete reinstall, wiping the HDD, but still the same will eventually occur, I havent a clue what it is, virus/worm or have my programs aquired through the pc and on it got contaminated, and those I find that arent duely becoming infected.

I really would appreciate some help, this is worse then a total crash, because I can always get it back up and running, but the problem I have now there seems to be no end to it.

Is what ever it maybe going through the network? but I need to know what it is to be able to deal with it. If it is a network issue does the problem reside in some or all of the PC's as it surely cant be in the router can it.

I have had a look around the net and tried a few things, not quite understanding it, but still no good. It was suggested to go into safe mode load software and use which worked initially, but when I rebooted and went back it didnt work when I tried to open program via short cut icon, it flashed up with a dos window.

If people can help would truly appreciate it, its doin my head in.

Cheers

Could it be the W32/pate virus I have?

W32/pate is a memory-resident polymorphic virus that will infect the .EXE and .SCR files. This virus can also spread via mapped drives and network shares, so you're going to need to get fully rid of it on all four computers.
