well took the back off and there are two main boards
1.scart ariel input
2.psu supply

both boards have muliple fuses inline which i have checked for continuity
most of the fuses on the psu are faulty and three on the scart input are also faulty
think i have found problem

now to find some spares

Sounds like what happened to my old CRT monitor last year, except it did not go bang.
Switched it on and some black smoke came out the back and the display went all funny and then stopped working, oh well it was 5 years old.
Chucked it, never looked back and now have an amazing LCD and loads of space saved.

Possibly the main electrolytic capacitors on the PSU have failed, these can weep over time and either pop in the way you say, taking out the fuses in the process or whistle/hiss over a prolonged period then just expire with a wimper one day.

Is there a lot of icky clear liquid around the PSU area? Are the electrolytics expanded or warped?

If it is just that the parts are cheap enough to find and easy to replace. But if you just put new fuses in the chances are they'll pop again quite quickly.
