starting from the basics......
you need File and Print Sharing installed on each PC
once that is ok, you need to set the sharing for the drives you want to share. To do this right click on the drive or folder in question and choose sharing or sharing and security, depending on your OS.

also make sure the workgroup is the same for both machines.
for WinXP:
Right click on My computer =>properties => computer name
make sure you have the same workgroup, if not simply rename one and reboot.

have been trying a few things...both are same workgroup.if i try to find the other PC using run \\compname\sharedfolder (file://\compnamesharedfolder), i cant connet. when i use the network wiz i get a load of MS warnings about pc security etc and not gone any further..as you can see not done a lot on networking b4...

i take it you have set the folders to be shared?
are the PC's running static IP's or assigned via DHCP from the router?
find the IP of one PC and try pinging it from the other. If it responds then that is the first step.
check that you have netbios turned on in the TCP/IP advanced properties.
try running the share as IP address\share

I have set various folders to share. The IPs are obtained via DCHP from the router, have tried pinging and get no response.Netbios is turned on. not sure what is meant by ip address/share.
I have tried almost everything else to be able to see the computers, must be missing something really simple somewhere...

Sounds strange. If youre using win XP: Have you tried the guides for setting up networks?
If not, have you checked the ipadress? Do u f.ex have the gateway address on both computers?
If you go into dos prompt you can write net info and get some information on your network.
