I would really advise going to one of the big Currys (on a business park or whatever) and actually watching the rear projection tvs and comparing them. I was looking at similar ones to you (haven't actually got one yet) and the picture difference between them (even ones of a similar price) is very very noticeable.
From memory the one with the best pic for about your price range was a Sony one.. but as I say, go to a shop and have a look at them - even if you buy them off the internet in the end.

IMHO,
as matt says, have a look at `em in the flesh.
both will have pro`s and con`s
both are vfm considering when i got my rptv (almost 2 yrs ago) they were ~£2k.
the only major draw back with them all apart from bulk, which is moved down and not back as with normal crt`s is the very poor viewing angle ~70 deg.
you can`t move much out of front and centre on both planes before it becomes poor.
would i buy one today?
if i was going up from a normal 28"-32" crt then yes without hesitation.
but looking at the future a couple of years down the line and hi-def, then lcd will be a must buy. (but back up to ~£2k vicious circle in`it).
btw. i chose the 44" sony.
also try www.avforums.com (http://www.avforums.com) they will have folks with these sets.
