And here they are, in no particular order.

1) Led Zepplin - Stairway to heaven
2) Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze
3) Silverchair - Emotion Sickness
4) Tool - Lateralus (My personal favorite of all time. If you don't know it, listen to it!! and not just the music but the words as well.)
5) A Perfect Circle - Weak and Powerless
6) NIN - Closer
7) Live - Lightning Crashes
8) The Doors - Light My Fire
9) Jars of Clay - Flood
10) The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony

Just curious what everybody finds to be the top ten rock songs of all time.

Learn to swim, learn to swim, learn to swim..........

I still like Sober and The Grudge better, but ALL tool songs are great. APC's Gravity also cannot be overlooked.

I don't see any Zappa, Floyd or Rush, Beatles, Depeche Mode, or Queensryche on that list. Howza bout calling it the top seven "recent" Rock songs and three oldies you like list :)

There really is no way of calling the top ten that everybody would agree with.

That being said....
1 Tool - Sober
2 Tool - The Grudge
3 A Perfect Circle - Gravity
3 A Perfect Circle - Judith
4 Tool - Fourty Six and 2
5 A Perfect Circle - The Outsider
6 Linkin Park - In The End
7 Adiemus - Adiemus
8 Queensryche - Silent Lucidity
9 Pink Floyd - Shine on you Crazy Diamond Part 1&2
10 Alice in Chains - Rooster

Only ten is incredibly limiting, actually. I could add tons more.........

I would make a top ten list but I probably couldn't even list 10 rock songs :p

Seems like rock has gone to crap in the last few years, just my opinion though.

I'll just go with the artists I like as I don't know the song names lol:

1) Led Zepplin
2) Jimi Hendrix
3) Metallica (old)
4) Tool
5) Motley Crue
6) NIN
7) The Doors
8) Linkin Park
9) 311
10) Sublime (probably not rock but I dunno)

Yeah, it seems that every new band that comes out has gone totally commercial and is leaning toward that punk sh!t, I.E. Sum 41, Blink 182, and especially Limp Bizkit (I can't stand Fred Durst). Just mindless noise with no redeeming value. If the band is lucky, though, a few of their idiotic lyrics will become implanted in our youth's minds by using some catchy phrase that they jump around to. To me, music isn't about that. It's an art, and it's an art that at the moment is lacking many talented artist. But can a band make it without turning totally commercial in today's world? Sure they can, but to do so you have to actually have talent. A prime example is Tool. How often do you hear them on the radio? How often do they do interviews? Do you ever see them trying to push their image onto America's youth by appearing on MTV's "Cribs"? No, but yet they are one of the greatest bands of all time and have attained superstar status almost everywhere in the world not because they look cool and get played on MTV every hour, but rather because of their true artistic capabilties. They've been around for something like 13 years because of their talent. Nothing like today's one hit wonders.

Sorry if I'm rambling, but being a avid music fan, it's kind of depressing to see one of my passions head in this direction.

Everything you said is true. Same thing is happening to rap as well as rock. Some of the crappiest artists are the most popular.

MTV is killing music. :(

Guns n Roses - Paradise City
Black Sabbath - War Pigs
Iron Maiden - Number Of The Beast
Billy Joel - Piano Man

MTV killed music when they decided not to have headbangers ball, and started playing rap. just put a c in front of it.

One here, with the exception of the "Yield" album which was a bit of a dog to my taste.

I guess every generation goes through a phase of disappointment when the music they grew up with falls out of favour - I feel the same way as fatty and pornoman about the sad state of music nowadays. Are you guys in the 20 - 35 age group too?

I haven't listened to rock in about 10 years myself (early 30's now) so I can't really judge what's good out on the air waves these days. Rock seemed to lose my interest back in the early 90's. Once I discovered techno, trance and all that sound a few years back I've been hooked ever since.

God bless the Essential Mix.

Well I think it's impossible to come up with a greatest top 10 list of the best rock songs of all time (otherwise that becomes a stupid MTV sponsored popularity contest). If you are talking about personal favs then that is another story. I can't pick songs. There are just too many to list from several different bands. I can list my favorite artists though. BTW fellas don't give up on new rock. Just because good rock isn't popular anymore doesn't mean that it still doesn't exist. I suggest trying out www.centurymedia.com (http://www.centurymedia.com) or www.metalblade.com (http://www.metalblade.com) and listen to some of the MP3 track samplers in there. I agree that alot of it is still crap but it is worth it to find that one undiscovered gem that you would otherwise be missing out on.

Anyways my bands are as follows (in no particular order):

Iron Maiden
In Flames
Megadeth
Bruce Dickinson
Rush
Geddy Lee
Lacuna Coil
Nevermore
Symphorce
Static-X (I know these guys are popular and are newer but I really like thier sound)

I went to a few festivals and gigs last year, some, if not most of the best of todays rock bands were all performing in the 'un-signed' section. That tells you all you need to know about the choices record company's make in todays world.

There is some good stuff about today, but nothing to make 'legends' i don't think.

I still consider groups like Godsmack, Rob Zombie and Disturbed new, and they rock! What I want to see more of are chick rockers like Lita Ford and Veruca Salt..There Hot!! :D

REM is great also. Sometimes they're songs are kind of off beat, but one of their greatest has to be "Mad World" from the movie "Donnie Darko".
