any suggestions to back up a full dvd that is not a movie that might have copy protection???

Try Alcohol 120% or BlindWrite.

use the above in conjunction with A-Ray Scanner (google search will reveal download), this will tell you what copy protection the disk has on it. Very handy tool. There are others as well but i personally use this one.
