I recently put together this rig.

ASUS P4P800-E Rev 1.xx
3.20 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4
1024 Megabytes Installed Memory
ALL-IN-WONDER 9800 SERIES [Display adapter]
Sony Trinitron [Monitor] (16.1"vis, s/n 2715764, July 2001)

I have installed the latest Catalyst drivers from ATI(ver 5.4) which states that you no longer have to connect AIW to Line In to receive sound. The strange thing is I have not been able to get the sound up and running at all for any part of this. I have tried it with the internal connector from the card to the AUX and the internal CD, I have tried with the external line jack. NO Sound, ever. I have plugged in the monitors speakers to the proper speaker jack and again, nothing. I have also downloaded the latest AC97 codec. I simply can't figure it out. Also, this problem is somewhat common according to other owners of this particular motherboard and they say the best thing to do is not use the on board sound and put in a PCI sound card.

Any Help would be appreciated.thnx

have you checked the jumper on the motherboard if it has one for the sound
making sure it's not set to pci slots but onboard sound

No jumper, only one choice in bios, auto or default. it's on auto.

Did you manage to get this sorted? Guess what? I have now the exact same problem using Asus K8N-E Deluxe motherboard. No sound at all. Built one 2 weeks ago and it sailed thru no problem. Have reinstalled drivers, reinstalled winxp, nothing. I get no speaker icon on the task bar either. Appears that audio is not installed, but it is..well... lol

was the sound working before m8
you could try checking the the small wires on the bottom right hand corner of the motherboard and make sure their all plugged in and not loose
also check the driver is installed

no - sound has never worked, however the speakers do click when puter is switched on/off. This is foxing me but I suppose it will be down to finger trouble when I eventually get it sorted. All other things check out just fine. Video is fine, connect to internet is fine, just no darned sound !! I have opted to reinstall windows and hence wipe/reformat the drive and start over again. Thanks

Dont ask me how because I do not know, but, sound is now working BUT from the Line In blue connector and still doesnt work from the correct green line out connector ! So in effect it is working but incorrectly. However, when the computer is switched off and then back on again the sound does not automatically start, to get sound I have to remove the jack plug and reinsert it. Oh joy.......

2 days later, I remove the jackplug from the line in and place it in the correct green socket and it still didnt work. Did the same a day later and the darned thing nearly blew me out of the the window...sound working perfectly and has done ever since. I can only put it down to a dodgy socket, before someone thinks "volume turned down" nah, not touched. I'm going to leave it as its now working and because there is a 3 year warranty on the Asus mb I could always get it swopped over if it plays up again.
