First need of course is broadband service, and I believe you have that. Second, you need a router. You can buy it from any computer store near you. Third, you need a wireless adapter. I don't know that your laptop have build in wireless card or not, you have to check it out yourself. If you have all of those need, you can easy setup your wireless connection just follow those intructions that come with your router and wireless adapter. Very easy to follow though.

Yep ....... a wireless router is all you need, if your laptop is wifi enabled.

One thing to bear in mind though .... for NTL you will need a Wireless DSL/Cable Router, not an ADSL one.

my laptop has a wireless card in it but my desktop has not. therefore I just need a router which plugs into modem or desktop yeah.?.

Basically cos on NTL I will only need a Wireless DSL/Cable router.

anyone advise on which brand to get.

cheers for all advice

I use this Linksys model on Blueyonder Cable connection and it works like a dream :

http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=6996&GroupID=0

Very easy to set up, by siimply connecting the Cable Modem to the Router and the Router to the Desktop PC, by RJ45 Patch Cables (1 included with Router).

Bad reports about Belkins dropping connections and Netgears overheating, so avoid these if you can.

Just a thought ... you do have a Cable Modem yeah ? .... with an RJ45 connection to your Desktop PC .... not a Set Top Box connection.

You only need one Network Card on the Desktop ... this connects to the Router and the Cable modem connects to the Router also.

If, however you want to locate your Desktop away from the Router and make it wireless also, you will need either a a PCI Wireless Network Card or a Wireless USB Network Adaptor.

my desktop will be next to the router so I do not need to make it wireless, therefore I only need to purchase the Linksys WRT54G 54Mb Wireless Router with 4 port switch you kindly showed me and I should be up and running. Thanks for all advice , hope I am sorted now and let u know how I get on when I have set it all up.

once again cheers Phil

hi Phil, recieved router this morning , but unfortunatly my NTL modem is connected via usb connections. The router comes supplied with ethernet connecters so unable to connect up at moment. If I use the supplied ethernet cable and connect it pc to router. Do i just need to get another ethernet connecter lead and connect modem to router. Will this sort it for me

Do I have to re install my broadband for ethernet connection.

Or Is there another way to connect router

once again thanks for help

Yes m8 just grab another RJ45 Patch Cable

You shouldn't need to reinstall anything .... just plug it in.

Fitted new cable , But for other members info I Had to reinstall internet onto desktop pc thro ntlworld disc again and click ethernet connection during internet set up. This worked a ok and I am using the internet thro the laptop. great. Thanks for All help Phil.
I do have a slight prob and I do not know whether to start new threead ? I am trying to access my e mails that are currently stored on my desktop but to no avail. I cannot get any/no messages out or in from laptop. Should I be able to do this using my current e mail addy from this wireless connection from desktop. Recieving/sending e mails no probs on desktop. I have entered the same details on laptop e mail set up as my desktop.

Assuming you are using Outlook Express on both machines, you should be able to set up a new account on the Laptop, using the same Username/Password as the desktop, just create a new mail account.
Make sure you get the pop/smt server names correct.

You wont be able to access the emails that are on your desktop, through your Laptop as such ... it's a case of using either the Laptop or the Desktop for email and depending which machine you check the email with, as to which machine downloads the messages .... i.e. messages opened on the Laptop will be stored on the Laptop and messages opened on the Desktop will be stored on the Desktop.
It's quite ok to use both, but things may get confusing ... having your messages spread over the 2 machines .....if you follow my drift.

thanks again Phil, incredimail is set up on desktop and outlook express on laptop at moment .Is it better to install incredimail onto laptop to get them the same ? also guessed that with the e mails would store on where I opened them but was not sure if I could access them from one or other. laptop is for the misses and she uses e mails a lot, due to her work, perhaps will just set up a new e mail account for misses on laptop and leave my desktop alone for me. did try and set her up on laptop earlier but could not send/recieve again due to an error sign coming up , user invalid. checked all pop/stmp and they are all same as my desktop e mail settings.
will play around this evening when I have more time.

Cheers for all advice

No probs m8 ... glad you are nearly there ;)

I've never used Incredimail myself, but afaik it shouldn't make any difference which email client you use .... the Laptop should work ok with either, as long as you enter the correct server/username & Password details .... it's totally independant of your desktop.
